AI API Security Best Practices for Web Developers
AI features often sit directly behind public forms and applications, which makes security and abuse prevention important even for small projects.
Keep private keys on the server
Browser code is public. If a provider credential must remain secret, send requests through a controlled server-side endpoint.
Validate user input
Limit length, reject invalid content, and avoid blindly passing arbitrary metadata or headers from the browser to an upstream service.
Add abuse controls
Use rate limiting, request quotas, logging, and sensible payload limits. Public AI endpoints can be expensive to abuse.
Minimize logs
Do not store sensitive prompts or credentials unnecessarily. If logs are needed for debugging, redact secrets and define a retention policy.
