How to Test an AI API Before Building a Product
A successful demo does not prove that an AI API is ready for an application. A short structured test can expose reliability, latency, output, and integration problems early.
Create a fixed test set
Use representative prompts instead of testing only one impressive example. Include short, long, ambiguous, invalid, and edge-case inputs.
Measure latency
Record request duration across multiple runs. One fast request does not tell you how the service behaves under normal conditions.
Test failures
Deliberately test malformed requests, timeouts, rate limits, and unavailable responses so your application can recover gracefully.
Evaluate output quality
Define what a good answer means for your application. Human review or automated validation should use the same criteria throughout testing.
