Using AI APIs in Discord Bots
Discord bots can use AI APIs to answer questions, summarize conversations, generate content, and automate community workflows. The integration is mostly an event-driven HTTP workflow.
Message flow
A bot receives an event, determines whether it should respond, prepares a prompt, calls the AI API, and sends a formatted response.
Permissions
Request only the Discord permissions the bot actually needs. Avoid broad permissions when a narrower configuration is sufficient.
Length and formatting
Discord messages have practical length limits and formatting requirements. Split long responses or summarize them before sending.
Rate limits
Both Discord and the upstream AI service can impose limits. Queue requests and avoid sending duplicate responses.
