How to Call an AI API with cURL
cURL is one of the fastest ways to test an HTTP API because it works from a terminal and exposes the request directly. It is also useful when debugging before adding an API to an application.
The basic request
Most JSON APIs use POST requests with a Content-Type header and a JSON body. The exact endpoint and fields depend on the API documentation.
Inspect the response
During development, inspect the HTTP status code and response body. A 2xx status generally indicates success, while 4xx and 5xx responses require different kinds of troubleshooting.
Debugging
Use verbose mode when necessary and check DNS, TLS, redirects, headers, payload formatting, and response content. Remove verbose output from production logs if it could expose sensitive information.
From cURL to code
Once the request works, translate the same method, URL, headers, and JSON body into your preferred language such as Python, PHP, or JavaScript.
