How to Use an AI API with PHP
PHP remains a practical choice for small web tools and shared-hosting projects. Its built-in cURL extension can call JSON APIs without requiring a large framework.
The integration flow
Collect and validate the user input, create the JSON payload, send the HTTP request, decode the response, and return only the fields your application needs.
HTTP errors
Do not treat a successful cURL operation as a successful API request. cURL can complete the network operation while the server returns a 401, 429, or 500 status.
Input validation
Limit prompt length and reject obviously invalid input before sending it upstream. This protects your application from unnecessary traffic and malformed requests.
Shared hosting
When deploying to shared hosting, verify that outbound HTTPS requests and the required PHP extensions are enabled. Keep API credentials outside publicly accessible files.
