AI API Error Handling: 401, 403, 404, 429 and 500 Explained

2026-10-04 · CVRON API HUB

HTTP status codes provide the first clue when an AI API request fails. Good integrations turn these codes into actionable messages instead of exposing raw upstream errors to users.

401 Unauthorized

The request is missing valid authentication when authentication is required. Check the credential, header format, and environment configuration.

403 Forbidden

The server understood the request but refuses it. This can indicate permissions, blocked access, policy restrictions, or origin controls.

404 Not Found

The URL or resource may not exist. Check the endpoint path, version, model identifier, and deployment configuration.

429 Too Many Requests

Slow down, queue requests, and follow Retry-After if present.

500 and 5xx errors

A 5xx response generally indicates a server-side problem. Retry cautiously and preserve enough diagnostic information to identify recurring failures.
